How To Make Homemade Pina Coladas
Nothing says “summer” like an ice-cold, fruity drink! But many of the drinks you buy at a store or a restaurant aren’t as fruity as you would think. In fact, most of them are filled with sugar and other additives that make these drinks quite unhealthy. As the summer months approach, we decided that we wanted to make a healthy alternative to the sugar-filled pina coladas that you can buy at the store. We created a pina colada recipe that will satisfy your craving for a fruit-filled slushy while keeping harmful ingredients out of your body and keeping your body healthy in the process. This drink is perfect to make for a barbeque, a day at the pool, or just for a healthy and refreshing drink. Try out our pina colada slushy recipe today and let us know how it turns out!
When we looked at the ingredients used in traditional slushies, we found so many unhealthy ingredients. These include high fructose corn syrup, monopropylene glycol, artificial flavoring, and malik acid. These ingredients are super unhealthy and can increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and can even cause headaches and tissue damage. Because of the serious effects that come from these ingredients, we found alternative ingredients to make your pina colada better for you.
We also have a few recommendations to make these slushies healthier while still satisfying your sweet tooth! The first tip is to be generous with the amount of fruit you use! Fruit has natural sugars that will make the slushy taste amazing.
Our next tip is to be picky in the types of coconut milk you use in your pina colada recipe. When you are selecting a brand of canned coconut milk, you will want to double check the ingredient list. In many brands of coconut milk, there are added gums, thickeners, and stabilizers. Many people don’t know what different types of gums can do to your body. While they are considered safe by the FDA, they may cause digestive issues. Using a brand that doesn’t have these additives will make your slushy much healthier and will keep your digestion working like it should!
Our last tip is to use local honey! Using raw honey that hasn’t been pasteurized will give you more vitamins and nutrients that are lost in other types of honey. If you don’t have access to local honey, you can substitute it with organic maple syrup or monk fruits as well. Each of these ingredients will work and are healthy alternatives to other types of sweeteners!

One of our favorite things about this recipe is how quick and simple it is to make! As long as you have frozen mango and pineapple chunks, you are good to go. First, add 1 cup each of frozen mango, frozen pineapple, and ice to a blender. Add ½ cup of canned coconut milk. Make sure you use a brand that has no added gums, thickeners, or stabilizers. Finally, add 1/3 to ½ cup of local honey, maple syrup, or monk fruit to sweeten the slushy! Blend the ingredients together, pour into a cup, and enjoy your refreshing pina colada!
